Readers' Workshop

Our Third Graders work hard in Readers' Workshop four days a week. They read a book, fill out a Response Log, do a Celebration Project and conference with a teacher.

They have become experts at this!! On Tuesday, Jan. 23rd they will begin a new Response Log and they will be able to choose from several new Celebration Projects.

Third Quarter Activities
Our Third Graders will be starting several new activities during our second half of Third Grade. Readers' Workshop will change a little to add a new Response Log and there will be 20 new Celebration Projects to learn and begin using. Guided Reading has begun for the groups. The kids are reading and completing activities and projects specifically for their novel. The class is off to a good start with their novels.

Our Communities Around the World projects will be due during the week of January 29th. Each group will share their map, flag and report with the class. There are some awesome projects in our room right now! The kids are excited to finish and to start sharing. The class will be scored on the rubric I sent home earlier. Ask your child to bring a new one home if you misplaced yours.

Spelling has a new format. The students are now expected to write all of their spelling words in sorts or categories displaying certain spelling features. Our first test is today, Thursday Jan. 18th. It will probably take a few weeks until everyone is feeling comfortable using this new system. The class will also be scored on 5 sentences they write using any 5 spelling words. They do this activity during the non-spelling test week. Most of the class did an excellent job on our first attempt!

Weather will be coming to an end next Thursday, January 25th when the kids take their test. We will be starting our Sound unit the following week. All the kids will bring home the worksheets we've been working on to help them study for the test.

Greetings 3rd Graders and Parents,
It was great to meet so many of you at Open House Wednesday! I hope everyone was able to get their supplies to their desks so we can take care of all those housekeeping items next Tuesday.

I will periodically put classroom items of interest, pictures of the class, etc. on our Blog site. You will get a newsletter which the students write, edit and publish themselves. Watch for the first edition in a couple of weeks.
